This is the component side of the PCB with the Joule Thief coil mounted. Also the 10uf capacitor.
The ultra bright blue LED is seen mounted at the other end.
No drilling are needed, the Joule Thief parts are just push thru the existing holes left vacant by the remove components of the remote control, notably the crystal ( which left two nice holes for mounting the Joule Thief coil ).
Note the wire connected to the battery terminal. This is the negative connection. This is one that is found on the remote that is not corroded so I reused it.
